Welcome to Alloa Online!

Welcome to Alloa Online - Alloa's Community Website.  Alloa is the largest town in the historic county of Clackmannanshire in central Scotland.  It is situated on the north bank of the River Forth, with the Ochil Hills forming a glorious background.  Written information regarding the early history of the town is scarce, however official records first mention Alloa as a small hamlet clustered round the Tower of the Erskines.

You will find local information, events , community groups and much more here on Alloa Online.  Alloa Online was founded under the   ClacksNet umbrella to promote local community use of the Internet, & provide assistance for local community groups to get on-line & have a web presence.  Please visit the Clacksnet website and our sister websites, Tullibody.org and Tillicoultry.org.

Survey shows new Alloa station is an outstanding success

A survey of patronage during the first twelve weeks of the new Alloa railway shows that figure for the year may exceed 400,000 – more than double the predicted usage of 155,000.

A recent survey showed that almost half of passengers were travelling to  Stirling, a third to Glasgow, while just under a quarter were going to Edinburgh and other destinations.

The survey also revealed that 70% of passengers undertook similar journeys before, of which:

30% had driven (with another 5% travelling as car passengers)
1% used a motorcycle
40% previously went by bus
24% used rail services (mainly from Stirling station)
SEStran Chair, Cllr Russell Imrie said:

“The incredible success of Alloa station is excellent news. It is proof-positive that when people have the option of a high-quality public transportation service, they will use it in preference to the car”.

“The figures suggest that over a 12 month period the new station will deal with up to 400,000 rail journeys. Of these 100,000 will be passengers who would otherwise have gone by car. That’s a lot of cars off the roads, and a major contribution towards reducing South East Scotland’s carbon footprint.”

Argylls to Parade Through Alloa

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, have recently been reunited with their families and friends after an extremely difficult and demanding yet very successful six month tour of duty in Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

A homecoming parade will take place in Alloa on Friday 12th December to give the people of Clackmannanshire a chance to show their appreciation and support to our young men from within our communities and others.

In 2006 the Freedom of Clackmannanshire was bestowed upon the Regiment in recognition of the county's long and proud association with the Argylls.

Provost Derek Stewart said: "The Argylls have been on the front line in Helmand Province undertaking security duties. I am delighted, that on their return the troops will parade through Alloa.
"Many men from Clackmannanshire have, over the years, served with pride and honour in the Argylls and our local communities have maintained strong links with them.

"Two years ago I was proud to bestow the County's highest honour on Clackmannanshire's own Regiment. The strength of local support for the Argylls was illustrated then when hundreds of local people lined the parade route and took the opportunity to applaud the men who continue to play their part in preserving peace and freedom around the world.

"I hope there will be a repeat of these scenes on 12th December."
